Measurement of sprite streamer acceleration and deceleration

چکیده
[1] Measurements of streamer velocity reflect the detailed internal microphysics of sprite development that is connected to the effects streamers create in the mesosphere. We report intensified high speed video observations of streamer development acquired at 5,000 to 10,000 frames per second that include the entire altitude range of sprites ( 40–90 km). Downward streamers accelerate to a maximum velocity 3–10% of the speed of light c and then immediately decelerate at an almost constant rate close to 10 m/s. This deceleration process dominates the downward streamer propagation in both time and distance. Measurements of the complete dynamics of sprite streamers from initiation to termination can give useful insight into their internal processes. Citation: Li, J., and S. A. Relationship between sprite streamer behavior and lightning-driven electric fields
[1] The lightning-driven electric fields not only initiate sprite streamers at high altitudes but also control their propagation to lower altitudes until termination. Thus, the relationship between sprite streamer behavior and their causative lightning-driven ambient electric field can reveal the internal microphysics during sprite development. In this work, we combined the measurements of broa...
متن کاملModel of sprite luminous trail caused by increasing streamer current
[1] This study investigates a possible physical mechanism responsible for the occurrence of the luminous trail of sprite streamers, which is also known as “afterglow.” According to streamer modeling results, when sprite streamers propagate with expansion, acceleration and brightening, the total current flowing through the streamer body also increases. The increasing current results in the rise ...
متن کاملComparison of acceleration, expansion, and brightness of sprite streamers obtained from modeling and high-speed video observations
[1] We compare sprite streamer modeling results with high-speed video recordings of sprites made with 50-ms temporal resolution. Both the modeling results and the sprite videos show that sprite streamers propagate with acceleration and expansion during the initial stage of sprite development. The acceleration computed from the modeling for the applied electric fields close to the conventional b...
متن کاملFormation of sprite streamers at subbreakdown conditions from ionospheric inhomogeneities resembling observed sprite halo structures
[1] Modeling results of sprite streamer formation from large ionospheric inhomogeneities or patches (several tens to hundreds of meter wide) indicate that positive streamers can be initiated at subbreakdown conditions from the inhomogeneities with a density comparable to sprite halo densities. For spherical patches with a given radius, the minimum density required for streamer initiation decrea...
متن کاملLuminosity and propagation characteristics of sprite streamers initiated from small ionospheric disturbances at subbreakdown conditions
[1] This paper reports a modeling study on sprite streamer formation at subbreakdown conditions, i.e., the initiation of sprite streamers in a lightning field below the breakdown threshold field Ek. Successful formation of streamers is observed for a variety of electric fields with the lowest field of 0.3Ek when an appropriate ionization column is introduced. The simulation results also indicat...
